Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Stoneywood/Dyce on Sun 24 Aug 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 9 wickets

Match report After what felt like weeks of inactivity, it was almost with surprise that the Forthill XI squad donned their whites for a league game under sunny skies at Forthill. The visitors from Stoneywood Dyce were a little fragile on their arrival at the ground having celebrated their first teams winning of National League 2 the previous day and we hoped that this might have an effect on their display.

After the torrential rain of the last seventeen weeks, it was an unusual Forthill wicket with the strip very soft and it became clear that winning the toss would be important. Unfortunately Simmy lost and we were inserted on a “sticky dog”.

Elliot and BP opened up and some accurate bowling and tricky conditions meant a slow start and Elliot was first to go caught at point. Clark joined BP and they slowly ground out a few runs in the face of some good bowling and field placing. We were slowly getting on top when Steven was bowled off his foot for a nicely compiled 20. Finbar settled quickly and played some nice shots before trying to cut one that was too far up and was bowled for a good 24. Ian and Jalees both came in and played positively in an attempt to raise the run rate and when then innings closed on 192 for 9 the home side were reasonably happy as it was felt at the outset that 175 would have been a decent score. Ominously the wicket was drying out a little, but we knew if we bowled well it would still not be easy.

Credit to Stoneywood for a good bowling and fielding display in the face of what appeared to be some severe hangovers. Never had a drinks break seemed so welcome.

Home teas have been improving throughout the season and the nice mix of sandwiches, sausage rolls and pizza - as well as a good array of cakes - lead to the award of a healthy 7 out of 10 tea mark. Points were chalked off for the lack of ladies, but extra marks were added for the newly provided leather sofas which proved a hit. Apologies to the inferior design team for getting spike marks on the leather.

Mention must be made of the skipper’s munching activities when he found it impossible to pass by Nikki’s Burger Stall without indulging in a cheeseburger before his tea…..

So it was into battle we went in the knowledge that line and length would be the order of the day on a still helpful track. In all honesty, what followed was a bowling display which fell into the forgettable category. Kevin bowled well up front and was rewarded with what turned out to be the only wicket to fall when he bowled Ervine and Jalees also continued his great from of the season. This pundit can only surmise that there must be some brilliant bowlers in the second ( and first) team if he can’t find a spot in these elevens?

For the rest it was a day to forget, although credit again goes to the two Stoneywood batsmen ( their pro and their first team opener!) who played well.

As ever in these circumstances, you have to take the limited chances which come your way and our only offer was when the pro heaved Jalees down to square leg. There stood Clark in animated conversation with Dave Thomson and he seemed somewhat surprised that the ball was headed in his direction. When he finally moved he managed to get somewhere near the ball but it only succeeded in landing him flush in the unmentionables before landing on the turf. He later claimed he didn’t see it and this suggests the following actions may be considered for the future.
1 – He gets himself down to Specsavers.
2 – When fielding in the deep he faces the pitch rather than Dave Thomson
3- He fields at fine leg at both ends from now on.

So it was a disappointing 9 wicket loss and congratulations go to Stoneywood Dyce who secured promotion to the Premier Division next year. They are a highly professional outfit and may well hold their own in the higher league next season. For our boys it was another lesson in application in the field generally and when we come up against the better teams in the league we do need to show better form than this display showed.

On the plus side, Kevin, Adees and Hardinger once again showed promise with the ball in difficult circumstances and credit goes to them also for their efforts in the field.

So we find ourselves in fifth place with three late season fixtures to go and hopefully we can finish the season with a flourish.

This weeks Man Of The Match Award goes to Clark for his 73 runs and he receives a voucher for Dinner for Two with Dave Thomson.

All players are reminded that there are double headers the next two weekends as follows-

Sat 30 Aug – Largo (A) friendly
Sat 31 Aug – DHSFP ( H) league game

Sat 6th Sep – Perth Northern (A) league game
Sun 7th Sep – Norwood (H) league game

All players are asked to ensure they let Simmy know of their availability and everyone is asked not to put their kit in the attic until these games are out of the way.
