Drinno's Protege's Reunited
The Christmas and New Year holiday season saw two 'old friends' of Forfarshire return for short visits. 

Congratulations are due to Robert and Abigail Cannon following their Scottish wedding reception held at Fingask Castle on Saturday 28th December, and a few days later Peter Drinnen paid a short visit with his family. 

The reception saw six of Drinno's protege's reunited for the first time in several years as friends and families from both sides of the Atlantic gathered to celebrate Robert and Abi's wedding prior to their return to New York the next day.

Twenty cricket seasons have passed since Peter Drinnen first arrived at Forfarshire to undertake a Youth Development role that ultimately saw him spend nine seasons in the area before moving on to coach Scotland and latterly The Netherlands national sides. Peter, Linzi, Samuel, Noah and Emme returned to Brisbane on 11th January and we wish them all well as they settle in Australia.

Forfarshire Win Falkland Sixes
Forfarshire rounded off a successful season by winning the annual Falkland CC six-a-side competition on Saturday 7th September. Wins over Dunfermline and Falkland second team set up an existing final against the hosts.

Tim smashed 18 from the first over from Ditchmen and was joined in the second over by Howie with both going on to reach 30 retired to see Falkland set a challenging 71 for victory. Bychov spoiled Andy's opening over with a maximum from the fifth ball to see 15 scored, but a tight over from Scott conceded just 5 runs to leave the game even after two overs. Howie's over went for 15 followed by 16 from Andy's to see 19 needed from the last over from Tim. The first ball went for four and forced Tim to abandon his off-spin and return to his long run which saw just three scored from the remaining deliveries.  photo gallery video

Junior Prizegiving & Trophy Winners
The Forfarshire junior section prizegiving took place at Forthill on Friday evening (6th September) in front of a full house of players and parents. The evening got underway with a general knowledge quiz followed by the main business of a brief review of each of the age-groups and the presentation of trophies.

All of the club's u10 Kwik Cricketers received certificates to mark their participation in a fun-filled season that saw lots of cricket played under the guidance of Susan and Richard. Samir reported on an u11 mini-hardball season containing several encouraging performances and Paul spoke of an u13 season that saw the team progress hugely over the course of the summer with a battling performance at Largo one of the highlights.

Ted took to poetry to pay tribute to the under 15 squad that won the Scottish Cup - read Ted's poem here - and the dominance of the team's performances were evident in the end of season averages that included the statistic that no less than 28 batsman retirals had taken place throughout the season. Rojo thanked everyone who had helped the team along the way and paid tribute to Ted's efforts before the team made the splendid gesture of presenting a signed Forfs playing top to their emotional coach!

Dick recounted the u18 season which saw a limited number of matches played with just Arbroath and Perth Doo'cot running similar teams before James spoke enthusiastically of the 4th team season which finished mid-table with 90% of the team comprising u18 age-group players.

Two League Titles in Forfarshire's Super Saturday 


Autoecosse Forfarshire were crowned CSL Eastern First Division champions and promoted to the Premier Division after a 78-run victory at Penicuik while Autoecosse Forthill 2nd XI's 10-wicket home win over Breadalbane sparked a double celebration at Forthill on Saturday as they leap-frogged Dalnacraig to take top spot in Division One of the Strathmore & Perthshire Union.





Needing two points to keep ahead of title challengers Falkland, Forfarshire chose to bat first at Kirkhill and reached 13 for no wicket after four overs when Wally adopted an aggressive approach to get off the mark, hitting a four and a straight six as he and Matty took Forfs to 50 for no wicket in ten overs. The first wicket fell in the 14th over when Wally appeared slow to turn for a second run and was run out by a distance, and two balls later Matty hit a high full toss from Steel to mid-on, and in his next over Steel deceived DCT who left a turning delivery that hit off stump. Scampi and Galzo came together at 78 for 3 and settled the innings for a short while before a straight full toss accounted for Scott C. Aman joined Galzo and together worked the ball well around the ground as the Forfs total recovered slowly from 91 for 4, and a total of 200 looked a possibility as the partnership developed, but with the total on 144 a rising delivery took the edge of AB's bat and was well caught by the Penicuik keeper, 53 being added for the fifth wicket. Tony and Tim fell in consecutive overs and after a brief partnership with Andy, a mis-judged second run by Galzo saw him short of his ground as the Forfarshire innings headed towards an under par 172 all out.

The opening attack of AB and Tim searched for the early breakthrough that was needed and it was a nervy wait until the seventh over when a short ball from AB found the top edge of Steel's bat to give Wally a high catch. Matty held a sharp gulley catch three overs later to remove Ashforth off the bowling of Tim and another wicket for Tim in his next over saw Pencuik 23 for 3. AB quickly followed that by bowling Steel for a duck to give Forfs the ideal start. The introduction of Andy saw Penicuik fall behind the required run rate, and two wickets in two overs including another excellent gulley catch from Matty put the game and promotion well within Forfs grasp. The home tail hung around longer than expected after two more wickets for Andy and one for Dale left Forfs needing a wicket for victory - and eventually it came from Tim who beat the defences of Scott to shatter his stumps and spark scenes of celebration. scorecard

SPCU Title Win for Forthill 2nd XI
Forthill 2nd XI had made an almost un-noticed charge up the SPCU Division One league table in recent weeks to set up a final weekend scenario of a win for Forthill over Breadalbane and a defeat for Dalnacraig at Coupar Angus would see the Forthill collect the league title. Breaalbane batted first and 3 for 16 from Rory and 3 for 30 from Andy C saw the visitors all out for 138. With an array of batting talent in the line-up, hopes of victory were high and it was Christian (75 not out) and Callum (40 not out) that continued their fine form of late to knock off the required runs without loss. Attention then turned to events at Larghan Park and a series of phone-calls revealed that Coupar Angus had successfully chased down Dalnacraig's 180 and Forthill 2nd XI were Division One champions.

Forthill 3rd XI Finish With a Win
Forthill 3rd XI rounded off the season with a tightly contested encounter with Arbroath United 2nd XI. Kailas returned his season's best figures of 3 for 16 while two wickets each for Cameron, Andy C and Rory saw the visitors finish on 166 for 9 after 40 overs. Rory (69) and Andy (31) got the run chase off to a great start before Arbroath fought back through two wickets each for Carnegie and McGill but Callum restored order with 27 not out to complete a fine three wicket win.

Forfarshire and Forthill 2nd XI Keep Title Hopes Alive
Forfarshire took a step closer to a return to Premier Division cricket through a 178-run win over DHSFP at Forthill on Saturday while Forthill 2nd XI's win at Coupar Angus on Sunday keeps them in the hunt for a league title, both with one game of the season remaining.

Forfarshire chose to bat first in the Dundee derby with Wally and Matty facing the opening attach of Strachan and Milne. Seven tight overs from Strachan conceded just 14 runs but still the Forfs made good progress - reaching 50 without loss in the 14th over as a century partnership developed. The introduction of Singye accounted for Matty, LBW for 58 at 129 for 1 in the 31st over. Scott C made his intentions clear by hitting 10 from Singye's next over, and his 39 saw the Forfs pick up the run rate heading into the last 10 overs having come to the wicket just as High School had slowed the scoring rate. Wally fell for an excellent 92 and it took a superb 44 from Scott G to maintain the Forfs scoring rate in the final overs to see Forfarshire post 274-7.

A series of single figure scores from the visiting batsmen quickly had Forfs well in control of the game with Dale (4 for 30) bowling a lively spell eight over spell that included the wicket of dangerman Strachan. Liam's introduction in the 23rd over saw two wickets in as many overs to reduce High School to 67 for 8 and only the resistance of Horne (39 not out) saw the visitors up to a final total of 96.






Forthill 2nd XI visited Coupar Angus on Sunday and three wickets for Ted (3 for 27) along with two apiece for Morgan (2 for 19) andRory (2 for 30) saw the home side all out for 190 in the 45th over. The Forthill run chase saw Christian out early after edging Oswald to Thorne in the slips, but a superb 92-run partnership between Rory (69) and Callum (39) saw Forthill recover well which allowed Hogi to play some attacking shots and record a fine 50 not out as Forthill reached their target with eight overs and seven wickets in hand.

Forthill 2nd XI Winning Run Continues
Saturday's rain forced the cancellation of Forfarshire's visit to Freuchie and Huntly's visit to Forthill however much improved conditions on Sunday saw Forthill 2nd XI chase down Kinloch's 199 for 9 in an entertaining fixture at Forthill while Gordonians were too strong for Forthill 3rd XI at Counteswells.

An opening partnership of 132 between Bowman (69) and Shakir (43) saw Kinloch look set for a high total at Forthill but a late innings fightback from Forthill starting with the introduction of Ted (4 for 30) and Glenn (3 for 42) saw wickets tumble as the visitors innings faltered to 199 for 9 after 45 overs.

After the early loss of Christian, Callum (75) and Hogi (36) added 99 for the second wicket to put Forthill well in control of the game with Callum posting his highest score in the senior teams to date. 

23 not from Glenn saw Forthill through to victory with 5 overs remaining to see the third team hard on the heals of Dalnacraig for the league title.

Forfarshire under 15s were crowned Scottish Champions at Myreside on Sunday 11th August after a 10 wicket win in the Scottish Cup semi-final over Largo and a fantastic team effort in the final against Grange saw the young Forfs win by 42 runs. 

Semi-Final:
Largo 55 for 6  (Jack 3 for 10, Blair 2 for 9)
Forfarshire 59 for no wicket  (Rory 35no, Christian 18no)

Final:
Forfarshire 137 for 5  (Rory 43, Connor 27no, Cameron 22no)
Grange 94 all out  (Jack 6 for 15 in 10 balls including a hat-trick) 

Forfarshire last won the u15 Scottish Cup in 1984, so nearly thirty years later, wins over Aberdeenshire u15, Arbroath u15, Largo u15 and Grange u15 sees the Forfarshire name back on the trophy. Well played lads!

Forthill Lose to Gordonians
Autoecosse Forthill lost their SPCU Premier Division match at Countesswells at Saturday after being bowled out for 103 by Gordonians with only Elliot, Dale and Quinno making double figures. Gordonians took just 24 overs to secure their win but not before Rory took two catches off the bowling of Sam in the only wickets to fall.scorecard

Forfarshire Overcome Glenrothes 
Forfarshire welcomed Glenrothes to Forthill on Saturday and swept aside the visitors in a crushing 251-run victory.

Craig called correctly at the toss and opted to take first use of a good Forthill wicket. Some movement through the air and off the pitch gave the visiting attack early encouragement but Matty (75 from 120 balls) and Craig (60 from 54 balls) soon settled at the crease to post a century opening partnership - the 100 coming up in the 20th over. The introduction of Wright brought immediate rewards for Glenrothes when Wally offered a catch to mid-on and next ball Galzo fell to a good catch by Greaves in the covers to see Forfs 112 for 2 after 23 overs. Watson was bowling a tight line at the other end forcing Matty and Howie to bat cautiously as they steadied the innings, and just 22 runs were added in the next 7 overs. From 136 for 2 after 30 overs, the run rate picked up quickly and Matty was unfortunate to drag a delivery from Crichton onto his stumps with the total on 211 on the 41st over. This brought Aman to the crease and his outstanding 63 not out from just 31 balls including seven 4s and two 6s helped propel the Forfs score to 299 for 3 after 50 overs, Howie finishing unbeaten on 72 from 77 balls.

The Glenrothes reply saw Greaves join Hopcroft in the 2nd over after Wright was bowled by Aman (5 for 17) and the pair looked set to attack the Forfs bowling whenever possible however with the total on 20 from 5 overs, Aman trapped Greaves in front to halt the scoring. Hopcroft followed soon after, bowled by Aman, as did Evason very next ball to leave Glenrothes struggling at 27 for 4. A lively delivery from Tim found the edge of Watson's bat and a Howie held a head high slip catch to make it 27 for 5. 

Aman's fifth wicket saw Rakshit out LBW before Tim hit the stumps twice in two balls the very next over - and miss a hat-trick by the smallest of margins - before sealing victory for the Forfs in the 17th over with another two wickets to finish with figures of 5 for 25.  scorecard  video

Forfarshire Dominate Weekend Matches
Forfarshire maintained their position at the top of the Eastern First Division with a six wicket win over West Lothian at Boghall on Saturday and followed that with a Cricket Scotland Trophy win over Ayr on Sunday to qualify for the Semi-Finals, and a trip to Uddingston on Sunday 4th August. Forthill put up a good performance against Mannofeild at Forthill but lost by 5 wickets and on Sunday, Forthill 2nd XI lost a high-scoring encounter with St.Modans.

West Lothian reached 92 for 3 from 28 overs through a 48-runpartnership from Denby and Raven but the introduction of Liam saw the game change dramatically as the home side slumped to 118 all out with Liam taking 6 for 26. Denby sparked the collapse with an attempted slog sweep over mid-wicket that saw a leading edge fly high to Tim at extra cover and along with a wicket apiece for Blackie and Scott, West Lothian lost seven wickets in the space of twelve overs. The Forfs response saw Matty and Galzo out early against the pace of West Lothian's Thomson, but 67 not out from Craig saw Forfarshire through to a comfortable victory in the 23rd over.  scorecard

Forthill posted 214 for 5 against league leaders Mannofield with Howie once again leading the way with 77 while Rojo hit an assured 40 not out and Andy adding a quick 29 at the end of the innings. Mannofield looked in command of the run chase at 160 for 2 after 32 overs but Forthill fought back when Andy took a sharp return catch to dismiss Nanthkumaran for 85 and Glenn did similar to see Jamieson fall for 65. Another wicket for Glenn however was not enough to turn the game and Mannofield reached their target in the 41st over with 5 wickets remaining. scorecard

Forfarshire travelled to Ayr on Sunday and chose to bat first in hot and sunny conditions. Craig (70) and Galzo (44) laid the foundations for a big score as the Forfs passed 100 in the 22nd over for the loss of just one wicket. Howie joined Wally after Galzo was out stumped and the pair looked in little difficulty as the score raced along towards 200 with Howie scoring freely. A flurry of wickets followed at the end of the innings as Forfs push for runs, the last wicket falling with the total on 247.



Forfarshire were on top quickly in the second innings with two wickets for Winker, both caught behind by Craig, and a wicket for Dale inside of ten overs. There was further drama when Winker hit the stumps twice in two balls as the Ayr batting line-up crumbled to 54 for 6 with Winker taking 4 for 36 from 9 overs and Dale 3 for 33 from eight overs. Liam completed a fine weekend's work with two late wickets to see Forfarshire win by 133 runs and qualify for a Semi-Final trip to Uddingston on Sunday 4th August. scorecard

St.Modans hit 240 for 8 at Forthill on Sunday with Andy, Adees and Morgan each taking two wickets. Glenn and Craig saw the score move along well early in the Forthill innings and despite 57 from Clark and a late 26 from Priyanaz Forthill finished 50 runs short of target. scorecard and match report

Winning Weekend for Forfarshire and Forthill
Autoecosse Forfarshire qualified for the quarter-finals of the Cricket Scotland Trophy after finishing second in group B of the Scottish Cup after an 8 wicket win over Kelburne at Forthill. At Lochside Park, Autoecosse Forthill overcame Strathmore by 53 runs after fighting back with both bat and ball when their hosts twice had the upper hand. On Sunday, Autoecosse Forthill were in action again, and a 29 run win saw them move further up the SPCU Premier Division table.

Kelburne chose to bat first and made effective use of the fast outfield and powerplay field in the opening overs and raced to 85 for no wicket after 17 overs when Quinno found the edge of McMillan's bat and Wally took a good catch standing up to the wicket. Winker was a late addition to the Forfs squad and his wholehearted 12-over spell included the dismissal of dangerman Sheikh, well caught by Wally diving to his left. 

Winker, and along with Scampi fought to keep the run rate in check and the Forfs struck again at 145 for 3 in the 32ndover when Bennett was stumped off Liam for a well made 78. Forfs bowled well in the later stages to restrict Kelburne to 255 for 8 at the end of 50 overs.

Matty and Craig looked at ease against the Kelburne attack and comfortably took the total past 100 in the 19th over with both reaching 50. A ten wicket victory was not out of the question as 200 approached, but Matty chased a wide delivery from Arbuckle and offered a simple catch to Hussain to end the partnership on 190. Craig reached a well deserved 100 and along with a quick 15 from Tim and similar from Elliot, Forfs reached their target in the 44th over, Craig finishing on 117 not out.

Forthill were reduced to 95 for 5 after 22 overs when Rojo (63) and Hogi (33) responded well and both batted beautifully to add 82 for the 6th wicket, Adam having earlier hit a quick 33 and Midge 24 as Forthill reached 177 for 6 over 40 overs. 18 not out from Dale, including two maximums, saw Forthill finish on a competitive 219 for 9 after their 45 overs. Gourlay (46) and Hewitson (29) gave Strathmore a good start and were well placed at 77 for 1 after 15 overs but the introduction of Ted saw two wicket fall in his first over, including the run out of Gourlay. Glenn came into the attack and ripped through the home line-up to take 5 for 35 from just 6.3 overs and ensure that Forthill took full points from the game.

Glorious Winning Weekend for Forfarshire CC

In what turned out to be a glorious winning weekend for the club, Autoecosse Forfarshire faced fellow promotion hopefuls Corstorphine at Forthill on Saturday and a recorded a 125 run win to extend Forfarshire's lead at the top of the CSL Eastern First Division. Autoecosse Forthill secured a 44 run win at Dyce while the third team rounded off super Saturday by overcoming Dalnacraig by 6 wickets. Autoecosse Forthill 3rd XI brought up the fourth win of the weekend by way of an 81 run win against Strathmore XI on Sunday while the under 15s were starring at the Scottish Cup finals day.

Forfarshire's final total of 244-9 looked a long way off at 69-4 after 16 overs having been given a solid start by Wally and Matty. 53 from Aman along with a timely 47 not out from Tony rescued the innings and set Corstorphine a challenging total.



A superb diving catch from Matty in the gulley off Tim started thevisitors downfall and a catch behind shortly after saw both openers back in the pavilion. A devastating 18-ball spell from Aman then produced five wickets for just one run to put the result beyond doubt. A third wicket for Tim saw the scoreboard read 39-8 although Hattingh then played with some freedom to hit 73 out of a final total of 118.

After a shaky start (7-2) against Stoneywood, Christian (59) and Simmy (39) led the Forthill fightback to see 185-7 scored at the end of 45 overs. Umair made a welcome return to the Forthill line-up and his 4 for 16 along with 3 for 29 from Ted saw Stoneywood all out for 141.

Hogi (5 for 23) ripped through Dalnacraig's middle order and along with 2 for 15 from Morgan sent them tumbling to 148 all out. 50 for Callum set up a Forthill win while Hogi finished the job off with 42 not out to complete a good day's work with 7 overs remaining.  match report

Andy hit a career best 86 and Craig (40) out of Forthill 3rd XI's 234-8 against Strathmore XI. This proved too many for the visitors and three wickets apiece for Andy (3 for 27) and Chris (3 for 36) along with 2 for 10 from Morgan bowled Strathmore out for 153.

Callum and Midge Star for Forthill 2nd XI at Breadalbane
Forthill 2nd XI travelled to Aberfeldy on Saturday 6th July and took first use of the Victoria Park wicket. Christian (69) and Callum (17) got the innings off to a good start and with Clark adding 35 in the middle order, Breadalbane were set 185 to win. Much hinged on dangerman Winmberley but when he was caught and bowled by Midge, the game turned in Forthill's direction with Midge completing a seven over spell that returned 5 for 24 to see Forthill win by 39 runs.  scorecard and report

Saturday Wins for Forthill and Forthill 2nd XI
Three senior teams were in action on Saturday – and both Forthill and Forthill 2nd XI took full points in their SPCU matches but Forfarshire came up 2 runs short in their Scottish Cup tie at Stirling. 

Stirling got off to a solid start with 41 on the board before Tim beat the defences of Carswell followed shortly by Andy trapping Carswell LBW with the total on 49. Elliot held an aerial drive from Gelderbloem and a good running catch from Andy at mid-off saw the Forfs in a dominant position after 30 overs when Stirling had reached 116 for 4. A dogged 36 from Shaw along with 31 from Tweedie frustrated the Forfs before a wicket for Galzo and the return of Tim brought two quick wickets as Stirling headed for a final score of 199 for 7 in 50 overs.

Elliot and Matty opened the batting and played a watchful game to take Forfs up to 21 for no loss in 10 overs. From there the pair pushed ahead and at drinks Forfs were in command of the game at 113 for 1. The century partnership was broken when Elliot looked to hit over the in-field but found Cordner to give Shaw the first of five wickets. Galzo looked in no trouble and had reached 26 when a delivery from Shaw rose sharply to offer Gelderbloem a simple catch at slip and Forfs were 156 for 2 with 15 overs remaining. With no scoreboard pressure the run chase should have been comfortable but Shaw (5 for 33) and Hewage (4 for 39) ripped through the Forfs batting line-up with six wickets falling for just 21 runs. Ten runs were needed from the final two overs and the equation came down to three needed from the last ball with Andy on strike - but alas he found the safe hands of Sutton at mid-on to turn the game on it’s head. video scorecard


The first ever Forfarshire Summer Weekend Festival of Cricket has been declared a resounding success - with thanks due to all who supported it.

Summer Festival Thriller at Forthill
Autoecosse Forfarshire welcomed Arbroath United to Forthill on Saturday for a Scottish Cup tie, and the large crowd swelled by Forfarshire’s inaugural ‘Summer Festival’ witnessed a thrilling encounter that saw Arbroath secure a one wicket victory with just one ball to spare.

Matty and Craig opened the batting for the Forfs, and adopted a cautious approach in the early stages of the innings – bringing up the team fifty in the 13th over – with Matty leading the scoring and reaching his half-century from 63 balls. Craig too passed 50 (82 balls) and a century stand was reached while the increasing run-rate suggested a score approaching 300 was likely. A reverse sweep from Wally failed to clear the in-field with the total on 166 allowing F.Burnett to take a simple catch and get Arbroath on the scoreboard. Galzo then fell quickly while trying to maintain the scoring rate to see DCT join Matty with the total on 184 with 11 overs remaining. Matty reached a well-deserved century from 124 balls but the home run-rate failed to accelerate in the final overs and a flurry of wickets hindered progress once Matty (130) and Dave (24) departed within the space of five balls and the Forfs conspired to lose a remarkable seven wickets in the last three overs of the innings.

A short delivery from Tim caught McLean by surprise with the first ball of the second innings and Tony accepted a simple catch at square leg. Bartlett struggled early in his innings but as time passed he looked more assured and his half-century along with a 105-ball 90 from F.Burnett saw Arbroath recover from a shaky start which also saw Ford caught behind off Tim. At 224 for 4 with 7 overs remaining, Arbroath looked favourites for a comfortable win but a great fightback from Forfarshire started with Galzo dismissing Burnett through a sharp chance caught by Dave followed by Andy’s dismissal of Petrie when he failed to clear Tim at mid-off. Peal then found the safe hands of Andy C and in the next over Andy W struck twice in two to leave Arbroath needing eight runs with one wicket remaining. The last over saw five needed which was secured with a boundary from the penultimate delivery.

Under 15s Reach Scottish Cup Quarter-Finals
Forfarshire's under 15s have won through to the Quarter-Finals of the Scottish Cup and a home tie against Arbroath or Perth Doo'cot, after a convincing 97-run victory over Aberdeenshire u15 at Mannofield on Wednesday night. Batting first, a superb 51 retired from Calum set Forfarshire up for the imposing total of 189 for 5 with Paul smashing 38 not out and Rory adding 30. Rory gave the young Forfs a great start with the ball with 3 wickets and a direct hit run-out, before Blair's 3 wickets secured a great team win.

Saturday Double - Forfs Top of the League
Autoecosse Forfarshire overcame Penicuik in quick time at Forthill on Saturday to sit top of the CSL Eastern First division at the end of the first half of the season while along the road at Lochlands, Autoecosse Forthill recorded a 79 run victory over Arbroath United XI.

Penicuik were invited to bat first at Forthill, and the new ball pairing of Tim and Dale once again had wickets on the scoreboard early. Tim was first to strike when a leading edge from Ashworth flew to Scott at cover from the fourth ball of the game. Dale found the edge of Fould's bat in the fourth over and Wally completed a regulation catch behind the wicket. Two wickets in three balls in the fifth over twice saw Tim and Hoggy at second slip combine to reduce the visitors to 8 for 4 and the partnership were soon back in action in the 13th over when another edge gave Tim his fifth wicket and a third catch for Hoggy. It seemed no surprise that in Tim's next over the same method saw Penicuik slump to 38 for 6 before a final wicket for Tim saw him record the excellent figures of 6 for 20 from 13 overs. Andy (3 for 26) rounded off proceedings after the Penicuik tail hung around long enough to take the final total to 70 and also saw Hoggy back in action to take his talley of catches to five with a sharp diving chance taken in the gulley.

With rain clouds looming, Wally took on the visiting attack and his 20 from 11 balls saw the Forfs off to a flying start before a good catch from Steel at mid-off brought his innings to an end. Hoggy (21 not out) and Galzo (17 not out) then also wasted little time in taking Forfs to the winnings Duckworth Lewis score of 70, in just 6.3 overs.

At Lochlands, Forthill lost four wickets cheaply but with Howie batting well the total reached 103 before he become the fifth man out. Quinno's return from injury saw him given an all-rounder position in the second team and he took the opportunity to hit 30 not out - including a glorious six over extra cover - and in a 91-run partnership with Andy (49 not out) took Forthill up to 196 for 6 at the end of 45 overs. Arbroath's openers looked in little difficulty and had reached a comfortable 42 for no wicket when Quinno (2 for 20) had Swann caught by Howie then soon after bowled Cameron, the game started to swing in Forthill's direction. Three wickets in four balls for Ted quickly gave Forthill the upper hand, and with the total limping towards three figures, two wickets in an over from Andy in addition to two earlier catches saw him complete a fine days work and round off a fine 79-run win.  

Sunday's 3rd and 4th team matches both fell victim to rain, and Livesport.co.uk Pro50 match between the Reivers and the Highlanders at Forthill was abandoned after just five balls.

Century for Galzo in Derby Win
Forfarshire won the Dundee derby by 98 runs at Dalnacraig on Saturday but back at Forthill, the second team lost by 105 runs to Rossie Priory. Sunday saw Forthill 2nd XI entertain Coupar Angus and a successful run chase saw them win by three wickets.

Batting first at Dalnacraig, Hoggy (25) and Wally (48) batted confidently against the home opening attack with Craig launching Horne for a six and two fours in the fourth over of the game. The total passed 50 in the 11th over despite home pro Strachan conceding just 23 from ten tight overs. With the total on 65, Hoggy looked to clear the short straight boundary but instead found the hands of Singye to bring Scott to the wicket. The pair added 28 before Craig unleashed a powerful drive back at Landwehr who hung on to take a very sharp return catch to see the Forfs 93 for 2. Dave (24) and Scott added 70 for the third wicket and with Scott batting with increased confidence the run-rate accelerated to see 147 scored in the last 20 overs with Galzo recording a well-deserved maiden century for the Forfs, while Scott C contributed an entertaining 23 in a fifth wicket partnership of 60 as the Forfs homed in on a final total of 274 for 6 in 50 overs.

The DHSFP run chase started slowly in comparison and with Dale collecting three wickets, the overseas pairing of Strachan (35) and Singye (21) had much work to do at 42 for 3. Strachan in particular looked to score with freely but when he fell LBW to Scott C in a six over spell that conceded only five runs, the Forfs took firm control of game and the introduction of Liam (4 for 42) saw the High School innings end on 176.  scorecard  video  photo gallery

At Forthill, Rossie Priory posted a respectable 216 for 5 with L.Hutton unbeaten on 61 and D.McAlpine contributing 47 while Ted (3 for 42) was the pick of the home bowlers with Sam taking the only other wicket to fall. A series of single figure scores put Forthill in difficulty early in the second innings and it was thanks to an enterprising 35 from Glenn and 17 not out from Samir that the scoreline passed 100.  scorecard

Forthill 2nd XI were set 185 to win by Coupar Angus after M.Nelson (68) and W.Sutherland (45) saw them up to 184 all out in the 45th over with Craig, Andy, Adees and Fraser all taking two wickets. A career best 81 from Andy led Forthill to a fine 3-wicket victory with Midge batting well for 37 not out while Clark (20) and Craig (19) also contributing vital runs.

Forfarshire Overcome Freuchie
Autoecosse Forfarshire won tense encounter with Freuchie at Forthill on Saturday but Autoecosse Forthill and Autoecosse Forthill 2nd XI fell to Huntly and Norwood in their SPCU matches. Sunday's visit of Montrose to play Autoecosse Forthill 3rd XI was conceded by Montrose.

Freuchie won the toss and chose to bat at Forthill and the lively opening attack of Dale and Tim gave Forfs a great start with two wickets falling in the first seven balls of the innings. A second wicket for Tim came when Gourlay, after hitting three boundaries, edged behind with the total on 36. Andy found the edge of Black's bat with the total on 61 and the catch found the safe hands of Dale in the gulley. Tim leapt far to his left to hold a caught and bowled chance to dismiss Khalil without further addition to the score and with his next ball bowled Forrester to make it 61 for 6 and saw him finish with 4 for 38. A second wicket for Andy saw Freuchie slump further to 67 for 7 but an eighth wicket partnership of 62 between Trivedi (54) and Kelly (23) frustrated Forfarshire as the visitors recovered well from the early wickets. Trivedi and Christie (24 not out) added a further 45 for the ninth wicket before Galzo trapped Trivedi LBW as the Freuchie innings closed on 179 for 9 after 50 overs.

The Forfarshire response got off to an unconvincing start, and at 64 for 4 after 20 overs there was much to do when Scott joined Tony in the middle. Between them they batted cautiously and total reached 100 after 29 overs but Tony fell for 28, bowled by Birrell, to end a 66-run partnership leaving Forfs with 50 to get from the last 12 overs, with 5 wickets in hand. Jalees fell LBW to give Freuchie hope of an upset, but Tim (21 not out) batted comfortably alongside Scott whose 62 not out held the innings together and saw Forfarshire through to a hard earned victory.

At Castle Park, Forthill had Huntly in trouble early after three quick wickets but a mid-innings 72 from Ferguson saw a recovery before a further fightback from Forthill saw Huntly saw Huntly 158 for 8 with Ted taking 3 for 58. A late order half century from Tait undid the good work and Huntly reached a challenging 240 all out. Howie and Midge combined to open the batting for the first time - and a hard hit 15 from Midge got Forthill off to a quick start, but with only Howie (75) and Andy (22) resisting the home attack, Forthill were bowled out for 168.

At Dawson Park, three wickets each for Blair (3 for 24) and Craig (3 for 33) saw Norwood dismissed for 151 but in reply Forthill 2nd XI could only manage 114, Clark top-scoring with 26.

Forfarshire Remain on Top
Forfarshire maintained their position at the top of the CSL Eastern First Division with a 116-run win over Falkland, but at Doo’cot Park, Forthill and Forthill 2nd XI both lost to their hosts. On Sunday, Forfarshire’s cup run in the Murgitroyd 20/20 fell foul to Aberdeenshire at Mannofield while Forthill 3rd XI played out a high-scoring friendly with Dalnacraig that gave a one run win for the young Forfs.

Forfarshire opted to bat first at Forthill and a wayward start from the visiting opening bowlers saw Forfs reach 30 for no wicket in just three overs, but shortly after ‘keeper Bychov held a sharp chance standing up to the wicket to remove Craig. The run rate remained above six an over before a mix up in the eleventh over saw Matty run out for a solid 37 leaving Scott to be joined by Aman. An aggressive innings from Aman saw him hit 25 from 27 balls before his dismissal triggered a collapse the saw four wickets fall for just three runs. Galzo (84 from 95 balls) continued to look comfortable at the crease and built an innings that rescued the Forfs from 155 for 7 to eventually post 218 all out, an eight wicket partnership with Blackie (26 from 39 balls) adding a vital 57 to the total.

Aman beat the defences of Ferguson in the first over to give Forfs an early wicket before his new-ball partner Quinno pulled up injured before a ball had been bowled in the second over to give Tim (2 for 32) the opportunity to open the bowling on debut. Galzo held a sharp chance at gulley to give his first wicket while two overs later a catch to Craig made it 24 for 3 after eight overs. Aman was not to be outdone and responded with four wickets in ten balls to rip through the Falkland middle order and reduce them to 45 for 7 and finished a thirteen over spell with 5 for 39. A wicket apiece for Blackie, Andy and Liam saw the remaining wickets taken after some resistance from Hepburn (36) saw Falkland up to 102 in the 34th over.  scorecard

In Perth, Saeed (61) and Ferguson (43) top-scored for Perth Doo’cot 1st XI as they headed for 207 for 9 in 45 overs, Dale taking 2 for 35 and Samir 2 for 36 and while Rojo’s tidy nine overs ended wicketless, they conceded just 22 runs. Forthill’s response started poorly with Finbar and Andy our early, however Howie (72) dug in and a brief stay from Simmy jnr (14) restored order for a while before three more quick wickets saw Forthill six wickets down quickly. Adam hit a well constructed 38 but it proved too little as Forthill headed for 157 all out in 42 overs.  scorecard

On the second pitch at Doo’cot, Perth 2nd XI were restricted to 171 for 7 in 45 overs – Craig and Glenn both collecting two wickets – while Armstrong (48) and McKinnie (37) once again proved the backbone of the Doo’cot innings. Callum (39) and Bryce (38) led the Forthill 2nd XI reply, but with too many wickets falling cheaply, the run chase ended an agonising six runs short of target on 165 in the 44th over.

Sunday Successes - 3 Games, 3 Wins

All sides that took to the field on Sunday recorded excellent wins. First up was the under 15’s with a convincing victory of Stoneywood-Dyce u15’s on Sunday morning followed by Autoecosse Forthill 2nd XI overcoming Kinross by seven wickets at Forthill while at Dalnacraig, Autoecosse Forthill 3rd XI won by 53 runs.

At Forthill, Kinross batted first and Andy soon made in-roads into the visitors with the early wicket of James Ross, well caught by Morgan at point, in the first of four wickets in an economical six over spell that left Kinross struggling at 21 for 4. F Gosse held the Kinross innings together with a fine 77 before Christian (3 for 7) beat his defences and Kinross slumped to 123 all out. Andy was soon back in action with a confident 34 before 23 from Bryce saw Forthill well on their way to victory. Scott followed up his two wickets with a hard hit 39 not out that included eight 4s and a six to end the game in quick style. scorecard



At Dalnacraig, Midge produced his best knock to date with an unbeaten 75 out of a total of 237 for 5 while Cameron hit 42, Ross 30 and Blair 21 as they made light work of the home attack. In response, J Sampson snr threatened to take the game to the wire, however Callum G (2 for 23) accounted for him LBW while on 94 after sharing a steady half-century opening partnership with W Hardie who became James’ first wicket on comeback. Finlay bowled Bancroft for 19 before Blair (2 for 13) took two wickets late in the game as Dalnacraig ended their 45 overs on 184 for 7.scorecard

Forfarshire's visit to Glenrothes on Saturday was cancelled without a ball being bowled, while at Forthill, two wickets for Dale and one for Samir saw Meigle 42 for 3 when heavy rained forced the match to be abandoned.

ECB Knockout Win for Under 13's v Kinross

Batting first, Kinross struggled to cope with the Forfs bowling with only one batsman making double figures. Callum G (4 for 11) picked up a wicket in each of his four overs and was well supported by Callum R (2 for 9), Rohan T (2 for 9), Liam L (1 for 3), and James G Jnr (1 for 6).  The Kinross innings eventually closed at 63 all out in the 17th over.

Opening the batting, Callum G powered his way to an impressive 35, including four 6s and two 4s before his retirement half way through the fourth over. If the Forfs thought it was going to be easy after this explosive start, no-one had told the Kinross bowlers or fielders. Wickets fell at regular intervals and accurate bowling and sharp fielding causing a middle order collapse with only a handful of runs required for victory in a dozen overs, so with the 'tail' well and truly exposed, the game was finely balanced. Step forward Gregor V! After a wide and two text book forward defensive shots he pounced on a half-volley, driving it powerfully to the boundary for the win. 

This was a great team performance, everybody contributing with ball, bat or in the field, so Junaid N, Meg R, Rohan T, Liam L, Adnan N, Simon A, Gregor V, Kailas N, James G Jnr, Callum R, and Callum G - take a bow!

Weekend Wins for Forfarshire and Forthill 3rd XI

Autoecosse Forfarshire got their league season off to a winning start with a comprehensive 199 run victory over West Lothian at Forthill and followed that with a 23 run win over Stoneywood-Dyce in the first round of the Murgitroyd 20/20 knockout on Sunday morning. Autoecosse Forthill lost at Mannofield in a game that was abandoned while Forthill were just three runs behind the Duckworth/Lewis target and Autoecosse Forthill 2nd XI's trip to St.Modans fell victim to rain. Forthill 3rd XI entertained Gordonians and quickly collected full points in a low scoring game.

Batting first against West Lothian, Matty set the tone of the Forfs innings by driving two boundaries through the covers in the first over as the scoreboard raced towards 50 in just 10 overs. Craig got off the mark with a boundary, and looked in great form, as both batsmen passed 50 with ease - Craig going on to reach a fine century in 102 balls while Matty was unfortunate to offer a return catch that was taken one-handed by Hamilton with his score on 83 to end an opening partnership of 183. Galzo flicked the second ball he received to mid-wicket and found the safe hands of overseas amateur Denby and shortly after Dave was stumped to see the Forfs 208 for 3 after 32 overs. Aman played an attacking innings and reached 50 in just 33 balls in a partnership with Craig that added 113 for the fourth wicket and ended when Craig picked out Dixon on the mid-wicket boundary while on 144. Heavy rain that had so far avoided the ground then forced the innings to a premature close after 46 overs with the total on 341 for 6. This saw West Lothian set a revised D/L target of 354 to win in 46 overs.

Aman was quickly back in action and trapped Ahmed LBW first ball of the West Lothian reply, and four balls later he bowled Raven. Two more LBWs, one for Quinno and one for Blackie reduced the visitors to 20 for 4 after 13 overs. Opener Denby then adopted a more aggressive approach and in a 19-ball barrage added 43 to his total with an entertaining display of hitting that brought the game back to life. A series of dropped catches blighted an otherwise impressive display from Forfarshire, and with Denby running out of partners, the innings ended on 154, Denby unbeaten on 117.

In Aberdeen, Howie won the toss and asked Mannofield to bat - and the opening attack of Tim and Dale contained the home batsmen well after an initial quick start, Tim taking 4 wickets and the later introduction of Howie (3 for 23) saw Mannofield slump to 90 for 8 with Howie. Van Orschot recovered the innings with good support from Proud to post a tricky 159 all out. Forthill lost Howie, Finbar, Gav and Hogi early and were reduced to 40 for 4. A brief recovery aided by 17 from Scott took Forthill up to 80 before Tim and Christian came together and looked to be taking Forthill to victory but rain intervened and when the match was abandoned, Forthill were 3 runs adrift of the winning D/L score.

Sunday saw Stoneywood-Dyce visit Forthill, and a sparkling 85 fromAman along with 34 from Scott saw Forfarshire reach a creditble 163 for 5 in their 20 overs. Forfs looked on top early in the run chase, but a series of boundaries brought Stoneywood back into contention - and it was Howie who took a crucial catch off Blackie (3 for 30) to dismiss S Conradie just as a dangerous partnership was developing. Willemse (39) continued to keep Stoneywood in the game and another fine catch, this time from Scott, was required to end his innings with the game in the balance. A wicket apiece for Liam and Blackie put an end to Stoneywood's hopes, and the Forfs progressed to a round 2 tie against Aberdeenshire by a 23 run margin.

The 4th team overcame Gordonians in their first match of the season, Paul's five wicket haul quickly putting the young Forfs in control of the game with some excellent catching and enthusiasm in the field evident. Chasing 62, Ross hit the ball well in a quick 47 not out that wrapped up the game in a convincing manner.

Century for Howie in Forthill Win Over Strathmore 

The very heavy rain from the previous day left the wicket a little soft for Autoecosse Forthill's home fixture with Strathmore in the SPCU Premier League at Forthill on Saturday. 

Skipper Howie won the toss and inserted the visitors and a fine early spell from Dale (4 for 19) on his first game back after surgery put the home team in the driving seat. Ellis (36) and Stewart (21) got Strathy back in the game however Tim (2 for 40) on debut bowled with good pace and the visitors were again in trouble. The experienced pair of Gourlay (34) and Milne (22) once again did a rebuilding job before both fell in quick succession and Howie (2 for 7) wrapped up the tail to leave the visitors 157 all out at tea.
 
Batting conditions were far from ideal and the Strathmore bowlers also extracted movement in the air and off the pitch and Forthill soon found themselves in difficulty. This left Howie to show his class and he batted beautifully as he scored a chanceless century. In spite of the best efforts of Strathmore's Blackie (3 for 28) and Stewart (2 for 38) Howie almost single handedly guided his side to victory, but received good late support from Tim (14) and Rory (13 not out). 
 
The winning runs were scored in the 41st over and Howie finished on a brilliant 104 not out. So a welcome first win of the season for the second team against a good Strathmore side who will likely finish in the upper reaches of the league this season.  scorecard

First Match for Under 13s

Forfarshire under 13's got their season off to an entertaining start at Forthill on Wednesday night when they met Arbroath u13's in a friendly. Played in very cold conditions, Arbroath scored 134 for 2 batting first, and the result was in the balance after 18 overs of the Forfarshire innings - at which point the Arbroath bowlers conjured up two excellent overs that conceded just three extras to restrict Forfarshire to 124 for 2.

Wins for Forfarshire and Forthill 2nd XI

Autoecosse Forfarshire and Autoecosse Forthill 2nd XI both recorded their first competitive victories of the season through wins over Stirling County and Norwood, while at Meigle, Autoecosse Forthill suffered a four wicket defeat.

Stirling chose to bat first at Forthill and faced the opening attack of Samir and Dave. Carswell was trapped LBW in the 6th over, but soon after the cold conditions forced DCT to pull up with a hamstring injury. New Stirling pro Ross Gelderbloem wasted little time during an innings of 51 from 53 balls while Bielby (37 from 83 balls) gave support at the other end, their partnership being broken when Liam (2 for 52) beat Gelderbloem's defences to take his leg stump and spark some vibrant celebrations. Farrar (21) and Bielby took the score to 127 when Farrar was well caught by Hogi on the mid-wicket boundary to become the third man out in the first of Blackie's four wicket haul. Two more wickets for Blackie, a calamitous run out and another great catch by Hogi saw Stirling slump to 149 for 7 as they headed for 168 all out, Andy coming back to round off the innings with 2 for 20.

The new opening combination of Hoggy (46) and Galzo (29) started at pace, and after six overs the scoreboard reached 50. Galzo fell trying one shot too many, however a solid partnership between Wally (37) and Hoggy developed before a Carswell bowled Hoggy with the total on 94. Tony, Jalees and Hogi all succumbed to the visiting attack quickly and at 118 for 5, the Forfs were in need of some stability. Blackie looked comfortable at the crease, but just as the tension eased he was bowled by Hewage (3 for 32) bringing Andy to the middle. He too looked at ease and the Wallace's appeared to be taking Forfs to victory before both fell to good catches leaving nine runs required. Dave hobbled to the wicket following his injury and he and Liam played a patient game waiting for the right ball to hit, and eventually they saw Forfarshire home by two wickets.  scorecard  photo gallery

At Meigle, Forthill lost wickets at regular intervals with only Howie (29) and Simmy jnr (26) making significant contributions to the total while Morrison took 4 for 18 for the home side. Burns and Leese got Meigle off to a solid start before the first of two wickets from Ted (2 for 33) saw Burns out caught by Rojo with the total on 35. A wicket each for Ted and Adees turned that to 75 for 3 but when Kneale joined Leese to add 44 for the fourth wicket the game looked almost over, but Rojo's 3 wickets in as many overs sparked some interest as Meigle reached their target with 4 wickets and 11 overs remaining, Rojo finishing with 3 for 11 from six overs.  scorecard


100 for Scott

Scott scored his maiden century at Forthill on Sunday and his 111 not out along with 47 from John saw 150 added for the third wicket against Norwood. Rory (30 not out) gave excellent support in the later stages of the innings to guide Forthill 2nd XI up to 247 for 3 after 45 overs.  video

A hard hit 55 from Harshall kept the game interesting in the early stages but the required rate always looked just out of grasp with the Forthill bowlers keeping to a good line and length. Two wickets for Blair and three from Scott wrapped up the game with Norwood all out for 165.  scorecard

Opening League Matches

Forfarshire and Forthill suffered season opening defeats at the hands of Arbroath in the respective CSL and SPCU matches.

At Lochlands, a second wicket partnership of 153 between McLean (97) and new overseas amateur Bartlett (77) put Arbroath in the driving seat, but the Forfs fought back when Jalees dismissed Bartlett, followed by Andy removing the Burnett’s in consecutive deliveries to see the scoreboard read 198 for 4 after 38 overs. Andy completed a well deserved five wicket haul with the wickets of Peal, Petrie and McGill in the remaining overs and limited the scoring to restrict Arbroath to a still challenging 255 for 8.

The Forfs response saw both Hoggy and Tim out LBW early to McGill leaving Craig (35) and Aman (30) to take up the challenge, but when Wally picked out Ford at long-on with the score on 74 for 4, the run chase petered out and Forfs were bowled out for 110.  scorecard

At Forthill, Winker and Finbar were welcomed back into the team after some time out, and Winker opened the attack along with Rojo – the later conceding just seven runs from his first five overs including the wicket of opener Swan. A third wicket partnership of 76 between Carnegie (65) and Plomer (60) saw the visitors reach 149 for 3 after 33 overs allowing them to push on in the remaining overs to finish on 231 for 7, Howie taking 2 for 46. Finbar settled in well at the crease having been asked to open the batting, and his 30 along with 21 from Howie saw Forthill start well but from 49 for no wicket slumped to 65 for 3 as the game slipped away.  scorecard

Sunday saw DHSFP play a mixed Forfarshire XI in a friendly. Batting first, Matty (44) and Rojo (19) looked in little difficulty but their dismissals allowed a blistering partnership of 136 to form between Wally (80 not out) and Scott (62 not out) as the Forfs scoreline was elevated to 223 for 2 at the end of 35 overs. In reply, DHSFP found Samir and Christian in good rhythm with runs hard to come by in the early overs. Blackie’s six overs conceded just three runs to keep a tight hold on the game with only Horne (57 not out) making any impact on the scoreline as DHSFP limped to 114 for 6 after 35 overs.  video


Captains XI v Presidents XI  -  Saturday 13th April

The 2013 cricket season got underway on Saturday when the President’s XI took on the Captain’s XI at a chilly Forthill. This was the first time such a fixture had been attempted and it was great to see players from across all the teams on parade.

The result was a victory for the Captains XI who reached 196 for 6 over 40 overs thanks to a lengthy third wicket partnership between Aman (104) and Craig (50) – with congratulations to Aman on being the first tp post three figures this season.

The Presidents XI came up 29 runs short, but not before Callum hit an impressive 40 with Simmy jnr chipping in with 34.  match report & scorecard





Aman Wins Dundee Sports Person of Year Award

Aman Bailwal was named Dundee Sports Person of the Year 2012 at the Dundee Sports Award ceremony held at the Caird Hall on Wednesday 20th February.

Awarded in recognition of outstanding performance throughout 2012, Aman represented Scotland at the under 19 World Cup in Australia as well as producing several excellent performances throughout the season for Forfarshire.

Scott Cameron was runner-up in the Young SportsPerson of the Year category in a season that saw him captain Scotland under 15s as well as make his National League debut for Forfarshire following impressive performances with bat and ball.


Forfarshire's under 15 team were runners up in the Young Team of the Year category and is worthy recognition of their excellent performances throughout the year, culminating with reaching the Scottish Cup final.

Samir Hill was rewarded with a runner-up nomination in the Young Volunteer of the Year category in credit of his work with the junior section and as team manager of the Forfarshire u12 mini-hardball team.

Dick Auchinleck was nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award (runner-up) to recognise his efforts to Forfarshire and cricket throughout the local area having been a valuable player, club captain, president and currently junior convener over many years in addition to serving on league committees locally and nationally.



Dundee Sportsmans Dinner Presentation

Forfarshire were one of number of local sports clubs to benefit from the 2012 Dundee Sportsmans Dinner that was held at the Invercarse Hotel in September last year and raised a total of £20,000 for local sports clubs. 

The club was awarded £750 from the proceeds and Kailas, Callum and Christopher represented Forfarshire at the presentation ceremony held on Saturday 26th January. The club are indebted to the organising committee, sponsors and all those who supported the Dundee Sportsmans Dinner for this award.

2014 Kit Available to Order

The 2014 range of club kit is now available to order direct from AllRounder Cricket. The kit is the same Adidas style that was used in 2013 but with new items added including a new design hoody and long sleeve tops and jerseys.

The kit will include the logo of sponsor Autoecosse on the front of the playing shirt and the back of the polo shirt. Members are asked to place orders now to ensure delivery in plenty time for the start of the season.

All senior team players are required to wear the new playing shirt during matches, and first team members are also required to wear club polo shirts (any type, old or new) before and after games.


Gordon Hermiston

All at the club are sad to learn of the passing of ex-Forfarshire player Gordon Hermiston. Gordon's funeral takes place at Dundee Crematorium on Monday 13th May at 1.15pm. 

Golf Outing Victory

Forfarshire's golfers won a friendly contest with neighbours Arbroath and Dundee HSFP over the fairways of Alyth Golf Club on Sunday.
The eleven teams of three players were faced with wintry conditions as they gathered at the first tee to see Simmy drive off for the Forfs in a round that earned a half. Baz's first drive suggested it might be long round, but his form improved to gain a well-earned half over Burno while losing to Andy. Third out saw Duke secure a clean sweep over father Howard and Peter to see the scoreline sit on Forfs 4.5 / DHSFP 3 / Arbroath 1.5.

Wally looked to be playing a captains role but his early surge was short lived however he was able to take a point from Shep while John Bennett won both his matches to see the High just a point behind overall. Hoggy impressed off the tee, so it was a surprise he failed to register a point in his matches with Sparky and Atholl - and it was Atholl's win over Sparky that transferred the lead to DHS after five groups.

Nothing separated McGill, Kyles and Crooks after the first nine but a win and a half for Kyles saw DHS edge further in front of the Forfs in the overall standings while Crooksy's win over Ben limited the damage. Buts and Arbroath president Geoff took to the 18th all-square and it was Buts who putted his way to a point in addition to a win over Gavin secured in an earlier hole to take the scoreline to an intriguing Forfs 8.5 / DHSFP 8.5 / Arbroath 4 after seven matches.

Spider, DC Bridges and Galzo saw an even contest - with reports of most playing golf in the same manner as they bat circulating on reaching the clubhouse. Fleming wrapped up two points for Arbroath early in the back nine in the performance of the day while a point for James pushed the Forfs back out in front by the smallest margin. Petrie and Jinglis all succumbed to Dinesh after he re-gained his touch with the driver in the later stages of the round to hand advantage back to DHS with just one group left on the course. Forfs 11 / DHSFP 11.5 / Arbroath 7.5.

Ted was drafted into the Forfs team late in the build-up to the match and the snow did not meet with his approval, but his self confessed 'tactic' of using the trees for cover saw the Vice-President deliver the vital point from a win over Daniel to see the Forfs collect the silverware in what was an excellent outing, the final scoreline reading Forfs 12 / DHSFP 11.5 / Arbroath 9.5.  photo gallery








Indoor Sixes Success

Forfarshire won a tense encounter with Kinloch on Wednesday 27th March to collect the Clubsport Indoor Sixes trophy at Mayfield.

The seventh playing of the tournament saw Kinloch finish the regular season top of the table with 11 wins from 14 starts, while Rossie Priory were runners-up with 10 wins. Also reaching the play-offs were Strathmore and Forfarshire - but it took until the last round of league matches to decide these positions. Forfarshire reached the final after a comfortable win over Rossie, while Kinloch overcame Strathmore.

New signing Tim gave Forfarshire a great start, conceding only four from the first over and taking a wicket (minus four runs) in the first over to see the Forfs on top early in the match. The first Kinloch pairing of Bowman and Shakir managed only a net 17 from their four overs but the remainder of the innings saw a recovery and Kinloch finished on 68 which, although slightly under par, was thought competitive given Kinloch’s disciplined bowling attack.

Blackie and Hogi recorded 25 in the first three overs, so the game was evenly poised as Tim and Simmy jnr took to the crease. Their four overs added 19 to the total leaving Howie and Andy with 25 to get. From ball one Howie looked in command of the chase, and ably supported by Andy the pair saw the total up to 70 with one over left - and there was little doubt over the result as Howie solidly blocked the last six balls in a tense conclusion that was undoubtedly a great final.
