Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Coupar Angus on Sun 01 Jun 2008 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report For the first time this season the weather intervened in a Forthill XI game; leading to the abandonment of the home fixture against Coupar Angus.

In the ten overs possible before persistent heavy drizzle brought things to a premature end, the visitors had raced to 69 for 1 and it was a relieved home skipper who seemed happiest to call play off for the day.

It seems that the approach of many sides has changed this year following the advent of 20/20 cricket. Not for the first time we encountered two opening batsmen prepared to try and attack the bowling from the off and it certainly makes for interesting cricket.

The highlight of the brief stint of play possible was an amazing display of specialist mid off fielding from Jonty Potts. Aside from the super accurate passing of the ball back to the bowler, we were also treated to an object lesson in backing up when Jonty pouched a McCandless shell from in front of his nose like he was catching a beachball being thrown by a kid. But the real piece of class was when the batsman threatened to take a quick single to him and Jonty shelled in one of his power throws which as usual snapped the bail in two. It is amazing to think that there are still players in Scotland who will take the liberty of taking a single to the best mid off in the world.

The rain break saw an unscheduled competition between the skipper and the barmaid which unfortunately cannot be recorded in detail due to censorship controls on cricket websites.

The extended tea interval saw potential dentist Neily rebuking Finbar for putting two sugars in his tea by telling him it was bad for his teeth. This was strange given that Neily had a can of Irn Bru and a Mars Bar in front of him. When this was pointed out to him, he defended himself by declaring that he only drinks fizzy juice and sweets at weekends. When we asked him what other craaaaaazzzzy things he got up to at weekends he said he also played chess and combed his hair. A straw poll of the team revealed that he was the only crazy cat who did mental things at the weekend that he didn’t do during the week.

The Man Of the Match Award went to Mo. This was mainly down to the fact that for the first time in weeks he was not wearing any of his sister’s clothing. He won a pair of beige shorts and a marshmallow.

Finally there was a worrying incident when an unnamed junior in the team (who sometimes keeps wicket) threatened to knock out an unnamed senior pro (who has taken two wickets this century). It is hoped that peace and harmony can once again break out among home ranks because if it doesn’t the senior pro is going to tell his mum on him.

So next week, it is beach balls out, buckets and spades at the ready and all aboard the Howie Tours Bus for the highlight of the year on the social calendar with the trip to Elie Beach. Of course, being an unsociable bunch of clowns who can’t hit the ball off a square never mind a beach, instead of heading to the Fife Riviera, Forthill XI will be squeezing into Simmy’s MPV and heading to the beautiful surrounds of Highland Perthshire.

Jonty has promised that next season he will let us go to Elie. But then again, he said that last year…………………………….
