Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v DHSFP XI on Sun 29 Jul 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 19 runs
Match report
After two unsuccessful visits to the gloomy Doocot Park, it was with great relief that Forthill XI returned to Forthill and its homely comfort for a grudge match against DHSFP. With the Forthill side containing a number of ex-High School pupils, a fiery match was predicted by the pundits and players alikeand the High School quicks were seen to be examining the pitch before the game in order to find the spots most conducive to their short, body line bowling…
The afternoon did not start well for Forthill, Andrew and Mo were both lacking a kit bag and a late call off from the Skipper after a heavy night threw the team into disarray when it was realised that with a largely junior side, there was no obvious replacement for Sim Senior. This led to several team members fighting for control, some with seemingly dictatorial intentions. As arguments broke out and candidates seeking to gain the support of junior members tried everything from promising high batting slots to effectively auctioning overs, an appearance from a tired looking Skip allowed him to delegate the honour of captaincy to young Neily whose tireless campaign clearly paid off. The sleaze and bickering was soon forgotten and Neil got on with the job as expected.
Forthill took to the field and Asif and Kev bowled very tightly for the first ten overs and restricted the high school opening batsmen well, a tremendous diving effort from Jalees accounted for the left handed Prof and Forthill were off to a very good start. Scoring was very difficult and although Junior’s comment of ‘that’s been sixteen dot balls in a row now’ was grossly inaccurate, it conveyed the mood of Forthill quite nicely. However, the runs began to flow more quickly as the High School’s number three began to play some good shots and the scoreboard began to tick with worrying speed. Although the bowlers managed to find the edge of the bat on several occasions, nothing went to hand and frustration grew among the Forthill bowlers. The overs ticked away and it was very difficult to manufacture a breakthrough. Eventually, the five wicket hero of the previous day – Andrew – shattered the openers stumps – a much needed boost for a team who were faltering in the rain. The rest of the overs passed without incident and Dundee High finished on a more than respectable 216.
Tea was taken and the inexperienced Neil consulted Junior in order to settle a batting order. It was decided that Gav and Junior himself would open the innings and both had to settle for reasonably light teas. The rest of the team however, stuck around and Mo, Stuart and Jalees could still be found gorging cakes well into the second over.
Forthill also found run scoring difficult as an experienced High School attack bowled accurately and it was not long before they had the wicket of Junior. This brought Neil to the crease and it was hoped that after minimal cooperation in the field – Neil cursing and swearing as Gav bowled on leg stump to an off side field and Gav returning with some choice words of his own – that the Martin brothers would leave their differences aside and work together for the good of Forthill XI. Luckily this was the case and both scored good thirties before both getting out caught and both walking off muttering and looking fairly disgusted with themselves.
Unfortunately, Forthill were miles behind the required rate and the middle order were forced to play very aggressively in order to bring the match within reach. This led to a flurry of wickets and the match seemed to be slipping away from Forthill. However, a late burst from Dean gave the team hope as he scored an unbeaten fifty with aid from Mo and Glen but it was to no avail – Forthill ended up on 199, only seventeen runs short of what would have been a very good win.
Overall, a good performance from a young side however the return of the old men to restore order to the third team next week will certainly be looked forward to.
