Freuchie v Forfarshire Cricket Club Forfarshire on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
Muir Road was bathed in warm sunshine for the Forfs’ visit on Saturday. We were delighted that the haar had remained in Dundee, and the new style Forfs shorts were in abundance as a lazy warm up commenced, plenty of crucifix stretching to be seen. The warm up got more serious when Coops started to smash catches up into the sky. Team superstar Watson arrived at 12.40, as normal, dressed like Britney Spears’ latest husband, and instantly started moaning about the height of the catches. Drummy lost the toss as usual and Freuchie chose to bat first on a decent looking wicket. With the short boundaries and fast outfield it looked like we were in for a long day when Sammy’s first over went for 8, and pitch hitter, ‘The Coo’ started swinging wildly. Fortunately he didn’t connect with many and was soon bowled by Coops.
Sammy found his line and with the ball swinging, our miniature slip cordon was soon in for catching practice. Sadly it is an hour with the Katchets for these guys on Tuesday with Dalts doing the throwing. Luckily Sam trapped Birrell lbw to save the pathetic slips’ blushes, and we had them 2 down in the first ten.
Gourlay and Rowley began to patiently rebuild before Umi tempted Rowley out of his crease for a smart stumping by Drummy. LJ bowled a tight spell and the run rate dropped before Ryan came on and they really struggled against his accurate spell. LJ’s good day continued when he got almost all of his left hand, right hand shouts correct at the beginning of the overs. Some of his team-mates expressed their amazement that this was the first time they had known LJ to concentrate for more than 15 minutes during a match. Sadly he will be unable to keep this sensational burst of form going as he is now off to Magaluf for a fortnight on a cycling holiday. Howie was introduced as normal to clean up the tail and keep his bowling average tidy, and good fielding throughout (apart from the slips) restricted Freuchie to 177.
A severe lack of hooters, horns and whistles suggested that the natives were not confident with this score, and the Forfs headed off for an amazing tea happy that this was a below par score.
Howie and Ryan opened and looked solid, Howie nudging into gaps and Watson off the mark with a 6 over extra cover before being adjudged lbw to a delivery that seemed to seam significantly as well as being too high. The umpire was heard to say that he thought it was close enough. This brought Coops to the middle and he was quickly into his stride, taking the Freuchie attack on at all opportunities. Howie played the perfect supporting role and it wasn’t long until it looked like Freuchie had given up, and the locals returned to the bar to start their annual swearing competition a bit earlier than expected.
The writer missed a large chunk of the action from this point as he took his daughter to the swing park. Suffice to say that Tom kept smashing it though as one ball was retrieved from said swing park, meaning he had hit it around 100 yards plus! Howie hit 16 off an over to win the game with 13 overs to spare, ending on 71 with Tom unbeaten on 80. All in all a very satisfactory win considering we were humped there a year ago.
