Forfarshire Cricket Club 3rd XI v Norwood on Sun 27 May 2007 at 1pm
Forfarshire Cricket Club Lost 8 wickets

Match report Forthill XI welcomed Norwood to Forthill for their latest league game in the Strathmore and Perthshire first division.

Unavailability, midweek call offs, injuries, late call offs and very late call offs meant it was a far from full strength team that took the field, indeed it was highly unacceptable for a club with our vast playing resources that we only took the field with ten men. This correspondent feels that many of the club members need to show more commitment to the cause and not use the third team as a social eleven and make themselves available and call off when they feel like it.

So Simmy distributed stickers with our names on them before the game so that we knew each others names and after the toss Forthill took first use of a green looking wicket. Mo and Gav opened up and unfortunately Gav went early caught at first slip. Clark joined Mo and they were going along nicely when Mo managed to get his bat on what would have been a wide and knicked it behind.

Finbar came in and the score ticked up to around 30 when Norwood removed their spinner who opened the bowling and put on their fastest bowler at second change. The confusion worked on Clark who miscued to cover and then Finbar followed two balls later caught and bowled. At this point Forthill were in the mire, but when Jean and Shabaz fell in successive balls we were in the deepest brown stuff imaginable. Simmy and young debutant Harjinder dug in and Simmy took a bouncer full on the elbow in Brian Close style. Unfortunately he then left the next ball which catapulted into his off stump and in came Teddy.

Young Harjinder showed good resolve to play out a number of overs before he got out and left Teddy and Jingles as the final pair. The experienced duo played well and Teddy elevated his call for full all rounder status by making a second top score of the innings of 10 before being stumped. All credit to Norwood for a fine bowling display.

So a paltry 69 all out for the home side and Freda was caught short and we had to wait ten minutes for the kettle to boil before tea could be taken. Simmy was being troubled by his elbow and Jingles applied some of his home made rub in the privacy of the toilet cubicle which bought a temporary smile to the skippers face. At tea, the weather went from simply freezing cold to freezing cold and wet and hopes were raised of a weather reprieve for the home side.

Norwood were informed that all games at Forthill were being played under the W and M scoring method in the event of rain effected games. They were advised that the Walker and McConnachie method was calculated in such a way that the ten minute rain delay meant that they now had to score a revised 348 off 33 overs of which 17 would be bowled by Ted and 16 by Clark. They would also have to face every other over blindfold, would have to spin around a broomstick before every tenth ball and at the fall of each wicket the incoming batsman would have to down a pint in one and sing Singing In The Rain with his pants down. Unfortunately however the rain relented quickly and Norwood set off in pursuit of 70 off 45 overs.

With ten men and in wet conditions the sufferance was short and sweet and we were soon back in the dressing room 8 wicket losers. It was hard to remember such an abject display and it can only be hoped that from now on the season improves. It certainly can’t get any worse.

The skipper collected the levies and made a bad day worse by investing it in the Deal Or No Deal machine and the club now holds an IOU for the tea money.

Due to the large number of injuries suffered by the club this weekend, Jingles has offered to hold a sports injury clinic after net practice on Tuesday. He will have bottles of his own personal embrocation rub available for dispensation on the night and asks if possible for orders in advance.

On a serious point, all players are also asked to advise the captain in advance of weekend unavailability as life is so much easier if only confirmed available players are selected.
