Arbroath v Dunfermline SNCL Play-Off at Forthill

The SNCL play-off between Arbroath and Dunfermline on Saturday produced a thrilling final over win for Arbroath in front of the largest crowd seen at Forthill this season.

Two wickets in two balls from Ben McGill, including the prize wicket of pro Waqas, saw Arbroath on top after 11 overs, but Dunfermline recovered from 57 for 4 thanks to a 99 run partnership between Reddy (75) and Rai (45) to be bowled out for 213 in the final over. At 36 for 4, Arbroath looked destined for relegation but Murray Clark and Fraser Burnett kept the scoreboard ticking over until at 130 for 5, a straight driver was deflected onto the bowlers end stumps, and Clark was run out for 40 handing the advantage back to Dunfermline.

When Burnett fell for 60, 17 were needed off 2 overs, then 8 from the final 3 balls. Shot of the game was a huge six over mid-wicket from Petrie before a drive through the covers saw Arbroath win with 1 balls left.

Weekend Results
25th/26th August

Despite losing to Arbroath at Lochlands on Saturday, Forfarshire avoided entering the SNCL relegation play-offs by 1 league point as Forfarshire’s 198 for 7 in reply to Arbroath’s 229-6 was enough to keep ahead of Arbroath in the league table.

Ryan’s 85 along with 36 from Tony saw the Forfs head towards safety, before it fell to Neily (17 not out) to score the vital runs. scorecard

At Forthill, DHSFP set the 2nd team 241 to win, but despite 74 from Finbar and 36 from Ted, it proved too many, and Forthill were all out for 198. This result leaves Forthill waiting anxiously for the result of Strathmore’s SNCL playoff against Corstorphine to settle the possibility of relegation. Forthill XI won a good contest at Doo’cot Park against Mayfield, to finish the season comfortably mid-table with a won 6, lost 6 record. Gav’s 70, along with 46 from Ian and 45 from Craig saw 253 scored in 45 overs. Mayfield never gave up hope of a win, but ended up 25 runs short as wickets fell in their attempt to maintain the required run rate. scorecard

High Scoring Game at Coupar Angus

Forfarshire travelled to Edinburgh on Saturday to take on Watsonians, but the forecast rain arrived about the same time as the team did, and no play was possible. Back at Forthill, the 2nd team game was abandoned after 43 overs, with Forthill on 146 for 7, Aman top-scoring with 39, along with 33 from Craig.

Heavy overnight rain left Forthill unplayable, so Forthill v Meigle was cancelled, but Forthill XI completed their game on the artificial wicket at Coupar Angus. An unbeaten 152 from Warren Sutherland saw Coupar Angus race to 264 for 4 in 45 overs. Forthill XI made a spirited effort in reply, but were bowled out for 200 in the last over of the game.

Forfs Win over Aberdeenshire

Forfarshire put together the team performance of the season so far to win by 55 runs against Aberdeenshire at Forthill on Saturday, 4th August.

Batting first, a quick 19 from LJ saw Forfs get a good start, before Howie (60) and Drummy (35) took the score on towards 100 before 2 quick wickets accounted for the skipper and Cameron. Tony (45) and Howie then produced a vital 78 run partnership as Forfarshire posted 218 for 8 in 50 overs.

A good start with the ball was required, and the bowlers delivered that, with Sam picking up an early wicket and Umair taking 2 wickets in his first 2 overs. Andy continued where he left off last week by bowling the visiting pro with the first ball of his spell, to reduce the Dons to 61 for 4 in the 15th over. Coetzer (41) and Nanthkumaran (28) staged a recovery but when both fell in quick succession with the total around 140, the Forfs took control of the game, and the remaining wickets were taken to see Aberdeenshire all out for 163 in the 44th over. scorecard
 & match report

On Sunday, Forthill XI made the short trip to the re-instated pitch at Dawson Park, but with the game evenly poised, rain forced an early tea to be taken. The continuing rain saw the game abandoned with Norwood 61 for 3 after 29 overs. It was a similar story just along the Arbroath Road at Dalnacraig, where Dundee High School were 120 for 5 when the annual Centenary Cup match was abandoned.

Forfs Win Against Renfrew

Forfarshire, Forthill and Forthill XI all took to the field on Saturday 28th July, with Forfarshire securing an important win over Renfrew at Forthill, while Forthill lost to SPU table toppers Strathmore at Lochside and a youthful Forthill XI lost to Strathearn at Doo’cot Park.

Youth and experience combined well at Forthill to guide Forfarshire to a 5 wicket win over Renfrew. Andy produced one of the best returns on debut in recent season’s with 5-36, while Howie batted through for 70 not out to set up a fine victory and to allow Umair to finish the innings in style with a six over mid-wicket.

Forfarshire  204-5  G.Garden 70* C.Miers 41

Forthill XI battled hard all day against Strathearn, and were on top after reducing the home team to 12 for 3, but a valuable mid-innings partnership between Hussain (78) and Hill (18) saw Strathearn stage a recovery before the late introduction of Simmy jnr cleaned up the tail. A promising start by Kevin and Simmy jnr was undone when both fell in quick succession. Ian (31) gave some hope of an away win but left too much for Simmy (27) to do, and Forthill XI had to be content in chasing bonus points, and were all out for 132.  scorecard

Kevin Ancell batted well for an unbeaten 100 to set Forthill 216 to win. 30's from Gav and Neily along with an unbeaten 50 from Dean saw Forthill put up a spirited run chase but were bowled out for 199.

More Rain

Rain again wiped out all play on Saturday however conditions improved for Sunday (8th July) and Forthill XI took to the field against Kinloch – and after a tight bowling and fielding display had reduced the visitors to 80 all out, the winning runs were knocked off in 19 overs for the loss of just one wicket.  scorecard & report

Hard Work at Huntly

Forthill battled hard against Huntly at Castle Park on Saturday 30th June, but lost by 7 wickets on a difficult wicket, while at Forthill, Forfarshire’s SNCL match against Drumpellier was abandoned at tea, Forfarshire having scored 193 for 9 in 50 overs. The wet weather then saw Forfarshire's Scottish Cup run come to an end by way of a bowl-out at Uddingston on Sunday (1st July).

Huntly’s ground was under water as late as Thursday, and the wicket reflected that, batting being difficult against the slow and variable bounce. Barry battled hard for his 28 while Andy hit the ball well later in the innings for 33 not out to set Huntly exactly 3-an-over to win. Huntly’s pro Azar Ali again gave a fine exhibition of batting, but Gav kept Forthill in the game with a 9 over spell that conceded just 17 runs before Ali accelerated the scoring rate to finish 70 not out in the 35th over.
scorecard

59 from Howie and 46 from Tony steered Forfarshire to a total of 193 for 9 at Forthill before rain halted play for the day, LJ also contributing a fine 23 in an opening partnership of 52 in 15 overs with Howie. scorecard

Forfarshire travelled to Uddingston on Sunday knowing that whatever the weather, a result must be obtained as round 3 is scheduled for next Sunday. Competition rules permit a match to be abandoned and a new shorter game to be started if weather conditions look certain to prevent a result in the original match - and this proved to be the case at Uddingston, but the shorter game was also abandoned, and Forfarshire exited the Scottish Cup by 3 hits to 2 in the bowl-out that followed.

Forthill XI Reach 2 Counties Final

Forthill XI have won through to the final of the Clark Thomson 2 Counties Cup after a 28 run victory at Brechin on Thursday night, 21st June.

Batting first, Steve (55 not out) and Andy (38) combined well to set Brechin a target of 122 on a soft wicket. Accurate bowling saw home wickets fall regularly, with only Beaton (40) providing any resistance, as Brechin were restricted to 93 for 9 from their 20 overs. scorecard and report

Under 23s Win Against XL Club

Forfarshire's under 23s secured a 7 wicket win over the local XL Club at Forthill on Monday 18th June. After restricting the 'forty club' to 185 for 5, a century partnership between Gavin (65 from 79 balls) and Neil (57 from 72 balls) set the game up for a tight finish. Simmy jnr and Finbar saw the under 21s home on the last ball of the days play. photos  match report

Forthill XI continued their good form this weekend, with a 4 wicket win over Arbroath at Forthill on Sunday 17th June, in what was the only game of the weekend to be unaffected by rain.

Forthill XI's trip to the North Inch on Saturday was cancelled due to heavy overnight rain and Forthill completed only 25 overs at Aberfeldy on Sunday before rain ended play for the day with Breadalbane on 107 for 2.

Forfarshire's home tie on Saturday was reduced to 33 overs-a-side and saw Forfarshire fall 21 runs short of victory. Needing
157 to win, 34 from Tony and 28 from Umair was not enough to set up a Forfarshire victory, and the last wicket fell with the total on 135.

Asif and Kevin combined well at Forthill on Sunday to bowl one of the tightest opening spells in recent 3rd team matches - before Finbar took 5-28 in 8 overs to see Arbroath all out for 121.  Early wickets saw Forthill XI 31 for 3, but 27 from Clark followed by a 50 partnership between Ian and John set Forthill on their way to victory against some variable bowling. scorecard and report

Forfs Seaside Winners

Forthill XI and the beach boys at Elie were this weekends winners – Forthill XI continuing their good form of late with an 8 wicket win at Arbroath, while Ted led a Forfarshire XI to a last over win against the Ship Inn at Elie Beach, but Forfarshire lost twice, to Freuchie and Poloc.

On Saturday, Forfarshire were bowled out for 110 at Freuchie, despite having been 88-2 at one point, Scott Birrell doing the damage with 5-18. In reply, Freuchie completed a 9 wicket win in the 23rd over. scorecard  photo gallery

At Forthill, Cameron top-scored with 95 as Forthill posted 224 for 8 against Perthshire but a century from Trevor Brown (105) rescued Perth from 30 for 3 to a last over win. scorecard

On Sunday at Lochlands, Arbroath were bowled out for 132 thanks to a good team effort, Asif taking 3-24 along with two wickets apiece for Mo, Kevin and Kean. Forfarshire’s Cockspur Cup run came to an end at Shawholm, being bowled out for 162 while chasing Poloc’s 197. Umair (52) and Howie (43) put Forfarshire in a comfortable position but 6 wickets fell for just 14 runs to see Poloc heading for the Scottish final against Grange.

Simmy Steers Forthill XI to Victory Over Mayfield

Forthill won a last over thriller at Meigle on Saturday but Forfarshire’s visit to Aberdeen saw a 5 wicket defeat in bowler friendly conditions. On Sunday Forthill XI chased Mayfield's 228 to win by 7 wickets, Steven hitting a match winning 83.

Needing 196 to win, LJ gave Forthill a good start with 43, before Bryce (44 not out) took over the run chase. Elliot smashed 20 from 8 balls to bring the target within reach and with 12 balls left, 16 runs were needed with Mo and Bryce at the crease. Ten runs from the penultimate over put Forthill within site of victory and the final six runs were scored with 3 balls remaining for Forthill’s second win of the season. scorecard  photo gallery

Forfarshire were bowled out for 71 at Mannofield with the overhead conditions favouring the bowlers. Aberdeenshire set out to knock off the runs quickly and lost 5 wickets along the way, Sam taking 2-37. scorecard

Sunday saw Forthill XI win at home to Mayfield, with Simmy jnr hitting his highest score with a well timed 83. Barry scored 45 in his first knock for the club and Steve’s 56 not out saw the winning runs scored in the 37th over to make it 2 wins from 3 league games for the third team. scorecard  match report

The second attempt to play Poloc in the Cockspur Cup fell foul of the west coast weather, so the match will now take place on Sunday 10th June.

4 wicket weekend for DeanForfs win at Renfrew

A good team performance saw Forfarshire winners over Renfrew by 76 runs in Saturday’s SNCL match in Glasgow but Forthill and Forthill XI both lost their home matches over the weekend.

On a difficult batting wicket, Drummy (33) and Chic (30) saw Forfarshire score a respectable 174 for 8 total in 50 overs. In reply, Richie removed one of the Renfrew openers with his second ball to start the steady fall of wickets, Umair and Sam both taking 3 wickets as Renfrew were bowled out for 96 in 40 overs.
scorecard & report

At Forthill, SPU league leaders Strathmore found themselves 6 for 2 at the end of the first over, Dean doing the damage, but visiting skipper Mark Mudie (94) along with Chris Milne (37 not out) led a recovery to see 240 for 6 scored after 45 overs. The home batting started brightly too, LJ (33) and Craig (26) taking the score to 82 before wickets started to fall and a disappointed Forthill were all out for 160.
scorecard

Calls-offs and injuries took their toll on Forthill XI as they faced up to Norwood at Forthill on Sunday with only 10 men. After being bowled out for 69, Norwood knocked off the required runs with the loss of 2 wickets.
scorecard & report

Rain forced Forfarshire’s Cockspur Cup tie against Poloc at Shawholm to be abandoned after 30 overs with Poloc 110-6. A prolonged rain shower left the square unplayable so Forfarshire will travel to Glasgow again next Sunday (3rd June) for the replay.

Two Games, Two Wins

Rain once again interrupted the weekend fixture card, but the two home games that took place produced wins for Forthill on Saturday, and Forfarshire on Sunday.

Slip catch by HowieForthill bowled and fielded well in blustery conditions to dismiss Stoneywood-Dyce for 133 - Elliot, Cameron and Steve all picking up 3 wickets.

Forthill's run chase looked on course at 50-1 from 15 overs, but 10 overs later it was a different picture at 117-7. As nerves in the home dressing room increased, Dynamite was instructed to play some shots... and he responded by despatching Stoneywoods returning opening bowler for two consecutive boundaries from the first 2 balls he faced, taking Forthill to within a few runs of victory, Bryce finishing on 27 not out.

Last Ball Win for Forthill XI
An unbeaten 53 from LJ guided Forthill XI to a 2 Counties Cup first round win over cup holders DHSFP XI at Dalnacraig on Thursday 17th May. Chasing 105, a single was needed with 3 balls remaining and after 2 dot balls, Finbar hit a boundary to secure the win. The next round is home to the winners of Montrose and Strathmore, who play on the 25th May.

Scottish Cup Round 1 Win

Forfarshire, and the under 13's were the only two club teams to take to the field this weekend, as rain curtailed most matches. Forfarshire progressed to round 2 of the Scottish Cup with a 7 wicket win over Penicuik, while the under 13s lost out to Largo in the junior version of the same competition.

At Forthill on Saturday (12th May) the umpires decided at 3.30pm that the ground was not drying sufficiently and would not be fit for play that day, so despite the Forfs being keen to play, they had to be content with 3 points for a cancelled match, under the new league rules.

An early strike by Sam saw Penicuik 10-1 in Sundays Scottish Cup tie, but visiting pro S.Cazzulino along with S.Chalmers took the score on to 137 before Cameron made the breakthrough that prevented the Penicuik batsmen from accelarating the scoring rate, and were kept to 215-6 from 50 overs.

Neily batted well for his 42 before being bowled by a delivery from Cazzulino that moved sharply off the seam. Ryan (79 not out) and Cameron (37 not out) batted cautiously at first to guide Forfarshire to victory with 5 overs remaining.

League Wins for Forfarshire & Forthill XI

Forfarshire collected their first 10 point haul under the new SNCL points system with a 13 run win over West Lothian at Forthill on Saturday 5th May. Drummy led the batting with 92 while Sam took 4-55 to remove West Lothian’s top order. At Arbroath, Forthill lost by 6 wickets but forced the game to the last over after scoring 188, Arbroath winning with just 3 balls to spare.

Batting first, a second wicket partnership of 120 between Drummy (92 from 122 balls) and Tony (51 from 72 balls) saw Forfarshire aiming for 250+ in their 50 overs, but 6-29 from Mark Dixon reduced Forfarshire to 217 all out in the 46th over.

Sam continued his good form with the new ball, and 3 wickets early in his spell handed the advantage to the Forfs. Richie then picked up the prize wicket of visiting pro Kruger Van Wyk with Drummy taking a fine catch from a delivery well wide of off stump. A late surge from West Lothian’s batsmen saw them edge closer to the target, but the required rate proved too many.

Arbroath XI v Forthill
Forthill lost a tightly contested match at Arbroath. LJ opened the batting, and made 44 in his comeback innings, while Elliot (30) and Ted (22) added late order runs to see Arbroath set 189 to win at Lochlands. James and Dean bowled economical opening spells but Arbroath appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory, however Ted and Cameron kept the home batsmen in check and with 2 overs remaining, 9 runs were required. A boundary from Pedgrift with 3 balls of the game left saw Arbroath collect the 25 points. scorecard

Two Tons at Forthill

Forthill XI claimed their maiden SPU division one victory with a convincing win over Strathearn at Forthill on Sunday 6th May, Ian and Clark both raising three figures on the scoreboard.

Batting first, a 2nd wicket partnership of 161 between Ian (101 off 88 balls) and Aman (45 off 72 balls) set Forthill on the way to a large total. The Strathearn bowlers continued to suffer as Clark’s clean hitting produced the second century of the day, from just 52 balls faced - and unusually, the centurions batted little together, sharing a partnership of only 13.

A tidy opening spell from Mo (2-22) gave Forthill an ideal start with the ball, and despite a 6th wicket partnership of over 100, the run rate was always slipping away from the visiting batsmen, Shabaz picking up 3 for 43 from his 8 overs.

Ryan Starts With a Century

A century from Ryan was not enough to secure a win in the SNCL season opener at Langloan on Saturday (28th April) while at Forthill, 93 from Cameron was not enough to post a winning total against Huntly.

Disbelief from A.Mohammed at being bowled by Quinno's off-cutterQuinno removed both Drumpellier openers to give Forfs a good start and a few overs later produced a big off-cutter to reduce Drumps to 22-3. Pro McCarthey (41) and overseas amateur Lewis (51 not out) held the home batting together as they recovered to reach 203-8 from 50 overs.

With wickets in hand, the game looked evenly poised on a variable wicket, but only Ryan (111) made any impact with the bat as Forfs were all out for 159 in the 45th over.
scorecard & report    photo gallery

At home to Huntly, Forthill found themselves in trouble at 7-3 before a 50 partnership between Cameron and Gav rallied the score but wickets continued to fall and despite Cameron’s 93, Forthill were all out for 147. Huntly scored the winning runs in the 34th over with Dean, Ted and Elliot taking a wicket each.  scorecard

Cockspur Cup Win at West
On Sunday (29th April) Forfarshire progressed to round 2 of the Cockspur Cup with a 99 run away win over West of Scotland. Defending 179, Sam led the bowlers with 4 wickets to see West all out for 80, Aman and Steve both picking up 2 wickets. The next round is against Stenhousemuir (at Forthill, date tbc) with the winners of that tie going on to play Uddingston or Poloc.
scorecard

Forthill XI's first ever match in the first division of the Strathmore & Perthshire Union saw Perth record a comfortable victory. Batting first, Clark, Ian and the extras column all reached 30 but the 147 scored was not enough to trouble the Perth batsmen, although a late flurry of wickets saw Perth 5 down - but the winning runs were scored with plenty overs to spare. scorecard & report

After losing an early wicket, DHSFP recovered with Kenny Kyles and Sameera Perera both hitting 50's but once they were dismissed, wickets fell regularly to see them all out for 207 in their 40 overs, Dean taking 3-12 in 2 overs to clean up the tail.
